New Releases: Novel, Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction, Theatre
Great titles to check out for artistic growth and inspiration, as well as an exercise to do after each read in order to strengthen your creative muscles
Some writers think that they should not read other works when they are writing their own because they will accidentally “steal” from that writer. I disagree. Even if you were to “steal,” say, a plot point from another writer, you would still make it your own given your personal point of view and story. So don’t worry! Go forth and engage with art! Free yourself to be inspired!
Here are a few books which I’ve read recently that both inspire me, and encourage me to strengthen my own creative muscles. Beneath each recommendation, I’ve included a writing exercise to do, if you wish. Regardless, happy reading! These books are fantastic.
Novel: True Biz by Sara Novic
Much like Madeleine L’Engle’s books, this novel is a great read for both adults and young adults alike. This coming of age story is provocative and funny. Both the author and most of the characters are deaf, and so you receive insight into a rarely represented community while enjoy the gorgeous writing.
Afterwards, as a writer, I found it very useful to sit down and map out each character’s story, where they intersected, and how those intersections inform both characters’ journeys and move the story forward as a whole. It was a lesson exercise in both character and structure.
Poetry: Guillotine by Eduardo C. Corral
I reread this book of poetry twice over a weekend because it was so compelling and beautifully rendered.
