Rachel Lynett is the most recent winner of the Yale Prize for their play “Apologies to Lorraine Hansberry (You Too August Wilson).” They are a queer Afro-Latinx playwright who writes dark comedies about complex, complicated women of color. Her recent playwriting credits include commissions with Barrington Stage Theatre Company (HOLY GROUND), Florida Studio Theatre (CARRY ME and AS YOU ARE), and Theatre Lab (LAST NIGHT). (1) How did you begin writing (when young/not just this play?
I’ve written for as long as I can remember but I didn’t think of myself as a writer. I used to scribble poems in the margins of my tests in school and would write books that my friends would pass around and read. At the time, I thought of it as a “hobby” and was pretty sure I wanted to be a lawyer. It wasn’t until I was about 21 that even considered writing as something I could do professionally.
(2) What do you feel is the most difficult part of the writing process, and how do you tackle it?
I really struggle with editing.
